I’m back and forth on if dnb is in the midst of a true “resurgence,” and producers like Detail are the reason I’m torn. I mean, he’s cultivating sounds that haven’t moved me in years, and has really turned up over the last few years. He received two Commercial Suicide releases in 2013, was featured on Med School’s New Blood 013 compilation, and has been behind a number of my favorite dnb heaters in 2014 (so far). This cut “Zooi” is taken from Bad Taste‘s Soul Synthetic compilation, and is chock full of that aggressive neuro sound that has, for whatever reason, found its way to be a part of my life for the last month. I have a feeling its the way he plays with rhythm; he could just rock with a basic two-step, but as you see around the midway point of this cut, he vows to go a bit left, keeping the tempo while really providing an off-kilter drumline. Dude just has it. This compilation isn’t out until June 30, but if you want to hear what the future of dnb sounds like, look no further than Detail, trust me.
