Panama City, Panama’s own Rell the Soundbender has risen to become a powerhouse and globally-renowned Central American EDM producer in 2014. Hot off the heels of Murder Was the Bass, a giant collaboration with left coast rap stalwart Kurupt and Korean-American producers the Far East Movement, Rell dropped the Gambozoo EP today with OWSLA‘s Nest free-label. Named for a zoo in Gamboa, Panama, the sounds on this four-track EP are as disparate yet closely aligned as the animals are in the zoo for which the EP is named. Strong industrial techno vibes (especially on epic EP opener “The Summit” and the title track “Gambozoo”) color this EP which storms through with brooding bass and bombastic melodies (the acid funk of Juyen Sebulba collaboration “Counterstrike”) that gives it a sonic intensity that expands the expectation of mainstream EDM at present. If looking for tracks that could easily be a difference maker in a DJ having a set that sounds similar to other big room and festival ragers this summer, the thick, yet swaying nature of his melodies definitely have a unique and ear-worming quality.
