Steve Reich & Coldcut – “Music for 18 Musicians (Maceo Plex Remix)”

Now this is intriguing. When we were younger androids, we discovered the music of Steve Reich through the experimentation of producers like Coldcut, taking those minimal sounds and really exploring them in a 90s state of mind. One of Reich’s most well-known pieces, “Music for 18 Musicians,” was first flipped by the Ninja Tune heads on their Let Us Play! album in 1997 (as “Music 4 No Musicians”), but they later reworked it on the Reich Remixed compilation. Around the same time, Maceo Plex was getting his thing in action, being one of the many names during the ’90s electronica wave to get a batch of critical acclaim. Somewhere in that time, Maceo remixed the Coldcut remix of “Music for 18 Musicians,” being dropped in his February 2012 Essential Mix. He takes the cyclical nature of the original that Coldcut heightened and expounded on it, dropping it into a proper house sound and crafting some slick material that harkens back to a number of eras. Recycling and educating and UOENO.
