I have this weird thing about me and the music I travel with. Like most of you, my smartphone is a big part of my life, and I keep a steady rotation of music on my phone. At the end of 2013, I went ahead and tried to clear out all of the music I had stored on there from the year, aside from stuff I just couldn’t live without. And I can’t front: Stray’s “L.A. Zoom,” a track I’ve been stuck on since last summer, stayed put. It’s just one of those tracks that grabbed a hold of me and didn’t let go. It has that thump that could be a juke/footwork tune, but with his dnb background, it feels more like some experimental jungle madness. Whatever picture you want to paint it into, the “VIP Zoom” version of this tune hits just as hard, giving you a slightly alternate take on this intoxicating gem. Plus, it’s a cut he’s been dropping in his sets over the last few months, so smart androids should already be up on it. He gave this tune away for those of us who can’t wait for the release of his Chatterbox EP, whenever that’s going down. Get your jazzy, leftfield jungle on to this one.
