They say the best way to improve your writing is to read more. I read all sorts of materials, books, websites, etc., everyday. It’s food for the soul. So when it comes to writing about music, it sometimes comes second nature for me as I can effortlessly get in touch with my #feels and write about a release and the words just flow. Sometimes though, and this is happening more often these days, I’m just at a loss for how to put what I’m feeling about a record into words. That’s sort of where I’m at with this new release from WDL.
WDL is a new project from Swedish producer Johan Wedel, kicked off with a debut EP entitled Legotrap featuring a lush and expansive sonic style that at times reminds me of Moby, RJD2, Tangerine Dream, and Seven Lions all tied together in a neat five-track package. Wedel has even produced for the likes of Icona Pop, Elliphant, and Erik Hassle. Despite this package’s neatness, it’s the EP’s emotional expansiveness and openness that is perhaps most startling. It’s hard to imagine tracks like these getting main stage play from DJs, and instead would find it’s way into festivals when WDL himself makes it there. There’s just a clearly emotional pilot behind this EP and it shows in the sampling style, jazzy piano licks, and cinematic arrangement. Now the whole EP is available for free download on a temporary basis, so grab that now and peep the DAD-hosted track, “With Blood” below!
