Ten years can be a long time or a quick whisper, depending on how you look at it. Based on the career Chase & Status has had, they might look at their time spent making and releasing music as a whirlwind of excitement that's underwritten by many hours of hard work. It has paid off, as they now have three acclaimed albums under their belts, as well as a label they're extremely proud of. And while you might know their story, and their tunes (we'd hope!), there are definitely some things about their lives and career that we imagine you're not totally up on. From the rappers they have (and haven't) worked with to how they ended up meeting Nile Rodgers, here are 10 things you didn't know about Chase & Status.
Status dropped out of university to pursue music full-time
Their first releases weren't even drum & bass
While primarily known in the beginning as drum & bass producers, their early work (like 2003 single "Like This") was straight-up breaks.
Both of their "More Than Alot" singles had dubstep b-sides
Snoop Dogg rapped over their track "Eastern Jam"
Entitled "Snoop Dogg Millionaire" (and somehow credited to Wild Animals and Chase & Status), Snoop D-O-double-G added his West Coast flavors to this massive instrumental. They called in Tavi Signh, who is known for singing Slumdog Millionaire's "Jai Ho," to add vocals to this one. It seems to have gone forgotten, but this totally happened...
Chase & Status have produced five tracks for Rihanna
As Rihanna has become a megastar worldwide, she's reached out and received huge tunes from all kinds of producers. Chase & Status have produced tracks on three of Rihanna's albums, including three track on Rated R, one on Talk That Talk, and Unapologetic's "Jump." Rihanna has gone on record saying that Chase & Status "are magic." They were even signed to Jay Z's Roc Nation under a management deal.
They were supposed to record with Jay Z and Kanye West
Word is Chase & Status were supposed to do some production for Jay Z and Kanye West (maybe for Watch the Throne), but unfortunately their schedules didn't align, although they did knock out a remix of Jay Z's "DOA."
Chase & Status is technically a foursome
"No More Idols" is certified double platinum...
"Hypest Hype" was never released as a single
In an odd turn of events, Chase & Status made a wildly popular video for the Tempa T-featured No More Idols track "Hypest Hype," with intentions of this being the album's third single. This never materialized (primarily due to them releasing it for free via their website), but the track somehow ended up hitting #70 on the UK Singles chart.
