22 REAL Drum & Bass Pioneers

fab groove 22 REAL Drum & Bass Pioneers

Recently, we openly spoke about the issues we saw with Vibe's "20 Drum & Bass Pioneers" list. And while its easy to stand on the soapbox and point fingers, it's another thing to put those thoughts into action and teach by doing. So, we here at DAD came up with our own list. 22 drum & bass producers, DJs, MCs, and labelheads that have truly helped pioneer this sound, be it with ground-breaking production or through their leadership. And while some of the names are mirrored (we didn't say it was ALL bad), we definitely made sure we delved into each artist's path, highlighting why they are part of this elite group. Here are 22 REAL drum & bass pioneers.

Let us not forget that Grooverider also introduced the world to rubber turtlenecks with no sleeves, a look that’s classic to this day.

In all seriousness, a great list, thought it might have been nice to see Bryan G, Skibba, Plug and whoever built The End (club in London) on there, too.

Grooverider went from the sleeveless turtlenecks to straight up NY fitted caps

    Much better. Bless up.
PS: Don’t forget ladies next time like Nut Nut, Rap, Kemistry, Storm, Wildchild, MC Chickaboo, Flight, & Empress either…. hehehee… I mean I wouldn’t be here without their influence. :) But nonetheless, awesome list.

hehehe… awesomeness ;) *why I made that post lol*

  • Eric Yo

shouts for highlighting D&B!!! and shouts out to my fellow promoters past, present & future for pushing the music we love!!!

  • Nigel Burroughs

“Some of your favorite producers’ favorite producer is Goldie.” …and Goldie’s favourite producer is ??? exactly who’s missing from this list, more research needed!

    • http://www.rockthedub.com/ khal

not sure what that has to do with anything; Goldie would probably list guys like Dillinja, Doc Scott, and some artists on Metalheadz right now.

      • Nigel Burroughs

you guys are just as misinformed as you appear to think Vibe Magazine is, i’ll leave the 1 reply and you can do your own research…4 Hero/ Reinforced/ Manix/ Tek9….this is the foundation of d&b period.

        • http://www.rockthedub.com/ khal

misinformed? you think because 4Hero wasn’t mentioned that i don’t know how vital they were to Goldie’s career? I guess you missed http://doandroidsdance.com/tag/goldie-week/ – and this isn’t a “this is the foundation of dnb” post. and like i said to someone else, this isn’t a “these are all of the pioneers” list.

          • Nigel Burroughs

No, I know that you do not know how vital they were to the creation of d&b because anyone who had the proper knowledge wouldn’t argue the point but admit the mistake…you’ve work to do, don’t misinform the kids whatever you do, go research some more and don’t knock Vibe when your prone to the same schoolboy error but on a grander scale.

          • http://www.rockthedub.com/ khal

your claims of misinforming anyone about Goldie’s work with 4 Hero are baseless, though. we’ve covered it before, during our Goldie Week, even posting full interviews with Goldie talking to Uncle Dugs about his time with Reinforced. your feeling that they should have been considered in this particular feature has been heard, and there are many more that could have been included. but the kind of feature you wanted this to be is not what it is. thanks for reading.

          • Nigel Burroughs

I said ‘no’ to your question about misinforming people on Goldie & 4 Hero’s relationship.

Again, anyone with proper knowledge of d&b wouldn’t dare to leave 4 Hero off a list with ‘pioneers’ in the title, they come before Goldie and many others in this list when it comes to pioneering anything d&b related, many on here would be embarrassed on your behalf for not knowing this!

how many times do you want me to say that your statements about things i don’t know are untrue?

  • rp

what about roast, kool fm etc….always about the producers / DJs when it takes real guts and stones to put on the events and pirate FM broadcasting.

      good points

Yes this clique helped D&B roll along in its early days, but so short sighted and greedy/scared, I don’t know which they were they almost strangled the baby they had given birth to in trying to protect there own income. The self proclaimed originators needed an Afrika Bambaataa type figure to really progress the music worldwide but instead they got 7 or 8 self absorbed twats who only cared about themselves and if it wasn’t for the internet and file sharing this music would have died a long time ago.

    Just my take on it

    Peace

    • http://www.rockthedub.com/ khal

you don’t think Goldie was that figure to “really progress the music worldwide”?

  • Astro Girl

What about DJ Soul Slinger of Liquid Sky? He started the first US Drum & Bass label, Jungle Sky. He may not be from the UK, but he’s definitely a “pioneer”. smh

    • http://www.rockthedub.com/ khal

is it really a SMH because we didn’t include Carlos, though? the list said “22″ not “the best” or “all.”

  • Rhys Tyler-Jones

Sorry for the lateness, just read this. I’m fully behind you with this list, it’s spot on. However I was really hoping that Nico from No U Turn would pop up. That man did as much if not more for dnb than many of those featured here. I just wish he got the credit he deserves, but I suppose that was his problem, being happy to sit in the background whilst pushing the names of Ed Rush, Trace, Fierce etc to the fore, and changing the dynamics of Drum & Bass forever. At the very least he should be here for introducing the distorted Reece bass to dnb.

Nico is definitely a don. “Torque” is one of the best releases, ever.
