Five Tracks: Special Skream Education Edition

The other day, Skream went on one. He compiled 50 or so tunes in a long rant that ended up educating some of us at DAD. So much so that every time we pulled up a new tune (via his Twitter timelline) we either got hit with chants of "OH I REMEMBER THIS TUNE!" or "WAIT A MINUTE, WHAT'S THIS!??!" Well, that was me, anyways. This week's Five Tracks is taken solely from what had me the most hype during Skream's Twitter education. Shouts to the Skream for this education.

Menta - "Sounds Of Da Future"

MSODF

It's pretty interesting that everyone knows that Magnetic Man is a three-man crew (Skream, Benga, and Artwork), but no one knew much about Artwork. I sure as hell didn't when I first heard of the crew, but hearing tunes that he worked on, like the Menta stuff? Brings back that essence, the middleground between UK garage and the darker dubstep tones.

Skream - "Midnight Request Line (Zinc Remix)"

STZR

I always pegged the "drumstep" sound to be around the time that Heist dropped "I Need Killers," but wasn't even thinking about what Zinc did to "Midnight Request Line" in 2006. It feels like he tried to bridge the gap between dubstep and drum & bass/breaks with this one, and it worked. Proper proto-drumstep.

Toasty - "The Knowledge"

TTK

Mary Anne Hobbs' Dubstep Warz program was my true initiation to the dubstep sound, but like the sample says in this record, "I seek knowledge." This tune actually dropped in 2004, and instantly hooked me. The way he edited those breakbeats, added those subs, and kept things all dark and sinister. Proper badman tune, and truy ahead of its time.

Bogeyman - "Smelly"

BMS

Swear down I had no idea that Twisted Individual did stuff outside of the dnb scene. Right? I'm not sure. I know I'd heard this tune get rinsed as well, but never did the knowledge on who produced it. Insane.

Dizzee Rascal ft. Wiley - "2 Far"

DRBIDC

If you're looking to get hype, turn this one on right... now. Seriously. Tough riddim, infectious. Taken from one of the most important albums in the UK grime scene, and will probably get your heart racing ASAP.
