When deadmau5 and Richie Hawtin got together at SXSW last year, we were not only thrilled but intrigued. The two together for a special set could have been just the beginning of the two's serendipitous and fortuitous relationship. Now a year later, that looks to have become the case as deadmau5, or should we say Joel Zimmerman or even "a skinny white kid from Canada" is responsible for the first record release in over one-and-a-half years on Richie Hawtin's Plus 8 label. Officially billed as "Sunspot (White Space Conflict)" by testpilot, the release features an original mix and a remix from Spain's Pig&Dan. As you might have imagine, these tracks carry a deep and cavernous size to them, as the track's cracks and whips snap along at a heavy clip. The remix is a bit more of the house tip, but both of these are heavy on their own. Fans of old school deadmau5 might be mistaken if they think they're going to get something with beautifully rich and uplifting chords, because this is some straight techno.
