EDC Las Vegas Won’t Be Livestreamed, but Pasquale Rotella’s Reddit AMA Will Be

Nowadays, most of your bigger festivals (both EDM and otherwise) have hopped on the livestreaming bandwagon. Ultra has done a solid job of livestreaming their massive Miami festival, as has Coachella, and while many have asked for EDC’s biggest event, EDC Las Vegas, to get into the game, Insomniac CEO Pasquale Rotella has seen things differently: “For years, I’ve been debating whether or not we should broadcast EDC Vegas online, but after watching other events adopt live-streaming, I felt that a traditional approach wasn’t for us. Sure, it may capture the crowds and the artists, but our experience is about so much more than that. That’s why we’re getting away from the traditional live stream format and creating something completely different. With EDC Curated, we are producing a unique experience that allows those watching around the world to select and view handpicked footage that highlights different aspects of the show. In doing so, we also preserve the experience for those fans that attend in the flesh.”

EDC Curated, which is “powerd by 7UP,” is set to “document the festival with more than 50 cameras at eight stages, including the Wide Awake Art Car and the Discovery Project stage, which will be used to capture the action, while Insomniac selects only the most interesting aspects of the experience for the viewers.” You’ll be able to watch the EDC Curated content from 8:30PM – 8:30AM PST on June 20, 21, and 22. These will be one-time-only broadcasts that you can catch on Insomniac.com.

Yet while EDC Las Vegas won’t be livestreamed, Pasquale Rotella takes time out during the last day of EDMbiz to conduct a Reddit AMA via /r/electronicmusic, which will be livestreamed starting at 1PM PST.

What does this mean? It’s not live-streamed but you can “select and view handpicked footage that highlights different aspects of the show”?

I feel like that’s a covert way of saying we’re not going to show you anything worth seeing. I guess we’ll find out tomorrow, but he’s tripping: I stopped going to Ultra in 2006, but seeing that livestream makes me want to go again.

I believe it means “we’re cherrypicking what we feel is the best from the biggest sets instead of doing one long livestream of select sets”
