Just Blaze & Baauer’s “Higher” Will Be the First Release on Re-Launched Priority Records

First it was 4th & B’Way, and now Priority Records (a legendary hip-hop imprint that was home to the likes of NWA, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Eazy E, Snoop Dogg, and others) is about to be re-launched and apparently releasing dance music. In a joint venture between Capitol Music Group and Insurgency Music, Priority Records is set to be a “producer-driven” label that will focus primarily on “electronic and progressive urban music,” with Just Blaze & Baauer‘s massive “Higher” being the first release on the new Priority, dropping on August 13. Michael Cohen, who was head of the North American leg of Pete Tong‘s FFRR imprint, is set to be executive of the imprint. He had the following to say about the label, its past in hip-hop, and the future:

I don’t come from the hip-hop world, but the genesis of that label was really about supporting the indie level; it broke the mold in terms of working outside the system to bring street-level music to the mainstream without any compromise. And the producer—who has always played a strong role in hip-hop—has become the focal point coming out of the global electronic music space. It’s heralded a paradigm shift in the way music is created, discovered and spread. Our first single ‘Higher’ epitomizes everything we’re trying to do with Priority.

It’s also interesting to note that Deadmau5′s Mau5trap imprint recently joined the Capitol Music Group, so maybe the writing has been on the wall. It has also been reported that Harry Fraud and his Surf School imprint signed a deal with Priority as well. We’ll see how many EDM producers Priority brings forth, but this should be an exciting development.

UPDATE The one question we had was “will the ‘Higher’ release include more than just ‘Higher?’” A twitter conversation turned into some key updated from Just Blaze on this release, and what you can expect in the near future:
