Calculon is a producer that’s spent the better part of the last four years releasing drum & bass on imprints like Fokuz, Rubik, and Think Deep, but his dubstep release on LA’s SMOG imprint took let us know that he’s got more tricks up his sleeve, and his debut EP, Feel, is out today on Loose Squares, and it highlights how much the bass music scene has evolved.
The EP kicks off with the Austin Speed-assisted footwork freakout, “Back the Fuck Up,” which reigns supreme in the pulsating sub bass tempo of footwork’s 160BPM range. “I Need You” does more to highlight how much footwork and classic jungle can blend into each other, while his collaboration with Sinistarr, “Bloodfight,” is a fuzzy halftime banger. The EP finishes up with “Crush,” a hypnotic drone of a footwork cut, with all kinds of dubby, spaced-out elements to help usher you through the path of the darkside.
If Calculon is this varied in his production, we’re glad he’s been given this space to let his freak flag fly. This EP is perfect for DJs looking for club-rocking sounds that maintain their own identity, and can work in a number of different sets. Loose Squares has picked a beast!
