Drum & Bass Arena 2013

If you read DAD regularly, you know we love that drum & bass. We know the real pioneers and we routinely tell you about some of the best out there, new and old. But DAD isn’t the only one doing that. Started in 1996, Drum & Bass Arena has evolved from just a niche website into much more, and this year, they’ve brought us another installment in their best-selling drum & bass compilation series. The 2013 edition features 34 tunes, including 12 previously-unreleased numbers. Landmark labels like Metalheadz, RAM Records, Hospital Records all make their appearances along with DAD favorites Wilkinson, Rene LaVice, and Nu:Logic.

The release comes just as drum & bass seems to be finally catching some more mainstream love on these internets and we’re thrilled. If you’re new to drum & bass but feeling a bit intimidated, this is compilation is a great place to start. With two continuous hour plus mixes included, you can most definitely find something to your liking. From the rather soulful bits of Calyx & Teebee’s “Elevate This Sound” or June Miller’s “Brave Man” to the junglist flavors of Wickaman, Hoodlum & Maverick’s “Renegade Skank” or the sci-fi techstep vibes of J Majik & Wickaman’s “Beyond Our Dreams,” there’s no doubt there’s something here for bassheads.  The release balances a multitude of styles and packages it all up it into a beautiful box.

Looks like a good mix, though it’s a shame they don’t acknowledge the new juke jungle vanguard of guys like Fracture, Dawn Day Night, Om Unit, Sinistarr and the like.

People stopped liking DnB in the first place because it go so one-note; would be nice to show off the far broader diversity of sounds now available to people who like 160+ bassmusic.
